Oh, the stuff we see in the field!

Our Fire Door Inspection Technician has been sending me some great pictures of what he has been experiencing in the field. Some of these pictures are so bad (and so out of compliance) they are almost comical. See if you can tell what's wrong with these Fire Doors?

Here's a closer look.....

  1. Door in the first picture would be ok if it has Sentronic closer or Mag holder, unless the clear opening width is less than 32" or has different elevation at threshold or this exit does not have another means of egress.

  2. I'll play... 1st pic not OK. Transom is not a wall, therefore penetrations as shown void label. Can't tell how door is held open so no judgement can be made on that. Also, if this is truly the direction of egress, there is no directional exit sign at the end of the hallway.

2nd pic: A bad hardware application does not mean it is a code issue. If re-entry is required, then there is a problem.

More importantly, you should be posting what happened as a result of this inspection! I (and others) have huge files of these kinds of pictures - which can be very entertaining. If there is no corrective action required, there is no improvement in building safety which is the purpose of inspections in the first place.

  3. Thanks for the comments. You are absolutely right in saying that it really does no good to point out the reasons for non-compliance unless we see some action from these Facilities in fixing the problems. Do you have any positive experiences that you can share in which you know of corrective actions actually being followed through with?
